  18. <p>     Nonkosher butchers usually keep a low profile in Israel,
  19. supplying meats to Christians and nonobservant Jews. But last
  20. week about half a dozen butchers handed out free ham sandwiches
  21. in downtown Jerusalem, attracting dozens of amused takers while
  22. infuriating others.

  24. <p>     The giveaway was designed to protest a proposed ban on the
  25. sale of pork by Jewish businesses. The pork law was one of four
  26. concessions the government made to the small ultra-Orthodox
  27. Agudat Israel party last week in return for a coalition
  28. agreement. Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir also promised to impose
  29. further restrictions on abortion, curb public transportation on
  30. the Sabbath, and outlaw certain forms of advertising deemed
  31. obscene by religious leaders.
